A word problem that takes ten minutes is often two minutes of thinking and eight minutes of slow multiplication. If 6 × 7 were cheap, the same page would be a thinking exercise. While 6 × 7 takes half a minute, the page is mostly waiting on recall.
Do the facts on their own clock, a short warm-up most days, even when tonight’s homework is fractions. Then the worksheet is shorter because the multiplications inside it no longer stall.
Stop before anyone is done for the night
