Multiplication facts practice for the short list that slips

A 2 through 12 chart has 121 cells, and each one is a fact your child can be asked. 7 × 8 and 8 × 7 share the answer 56, so the chart holds 66 different pairs. TimesOwl starts at the 2s; the 0s and 1s each follow one rule.

Whole families fall to a pattern. The 2s are doubles. The 10s add a zero. The 5s are half of the 10s and end in 5 or 0. The 11s up to 11 × 9 repeat the digit, so 11 × 4 = 44. Squares like 8 × 8 = 64 tend to stick on their own.

Take out the 2s, 5s, 10s, and 11s, count each turnaround once, and 28 pairs remain. Most children already own the small ones, like 3 × 4 and 4 × 4.

What is left clusters in the 6s through 9s: 6 × 7 = 42, 6 × 8 = 48, 7 × 8 = 56, 6 × 9 = 54, 7 × 9 = 63, and 8 × 9 = 72. The answers sit close together, so a wrong guess often lands on a neighbor, like 54 for 56. The 8 times tables guide walks through the 48, 56, 64 stretch.

Once the 12s are in, 7 × 12 = 84 and 8 × 12 = 96 join the list. That short list is where daily minutes pay. The rest only needs an occasional check.

A mastered fact comes back without counting, in a few seconds, and it is still there after a week away. Quick on Tuesday and gone by Friday means it was only warm.
