Times tables practice at home, one short session at a time

Begin with the 2s through 5s. The 2s are doubles, the 5s end in 5 or 0, and the 3s and 4s are small enough to work out while they settle. That first band gives early wins and gets your child used to typing answers.

The 6s, 7s, and 8s hold most of the hard facts, so add them once the first band is holding. The 9s and 10s come after, the 11s and 12s last. The multiplication facts guide lists the few facts in that middle band that cause most misses.

Set a timer for five minutes. One fact at a time, and your child types the answer, because the school quiz is a blank line. Most of the list is facts that are due today, with a few new ones when there is room.

Use the same slot most days, after snack or before screens. When the timer ends, stop, even in the middle of a good run. A session that ends on time is the one that happens again tomorrow.

Show the right answer and keep going. Read 7 × 8 = 56 and 8 × 7 = 56 together once, since they are one fact. Skip re-drilling the whole row; one miss tells you about one fact.

The missed fact should come back a minute or two later in the same session, then the next day. If it holds, the gap grows. The 8 times tables guide shows why 8 × 7 is the miss that keeps returning.

Print a short multiplication quiz with only the tables your child has covered so far. It works as a dress rehearsal for test week. Facts that went wrong on paper are the ones to watch over the next few sessions.
